Mountain West Basketball: New Year!
The Mountain West tipped off the 2020 basketball schedule with several New Year Day games and a statement this could be a very interesting conference season!
The game that hits you right off the bat is San Jose State's 88-85 win over New Mexico. Where did that come from?
How about UNLV beating Utah State, not so much the Rebels winning but 70-53 over the Aggies now that was surprising.
Other games on New Years Day were more predictable as Boise State topped Wyoming 65-54, Nevada beat Colorado State 67-61 and San Diego State snapped a five game losing ski to Fresno State beating the Bulldogs 61-52.
San Diego State is now 14-0 and ranked no.13 in the AP basketball poll. The Aztecs and Auburn are the only two unbeaten teams in the AP Top 25.
Boise State has now won four straight games and Justinian Jessop, averaging 23.7 pts in conference action, is the only Mountain West player averaging 20 or more points in league.
Jessop needs just two more "made three pointers" to tie Anthony Drimic for the all time record at Boise State with 275. That should happen Saturday when the Broncos play at Nevada Saturday at 4 pm on the CBS Sports Network.
Here is a look at the top half of the Mountain West standings heading into the weekend:
San Diego State 4-0, Nevada 2-0, UNLV 2-0, Boise State 2-1, Utah State 2-1 and New mexico 2-1.
