Boise Ties to NCAA Women’s Tournament
The Field is set for the 2017 NCAA women's basketball tournament and for area fans there is quite a bit of local flavor this year. The most obvious being Boise States selection as a #13 seed to play UCLA Saturday at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles. Tipoff at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
The Broncos, who have won 10 in a row are in the same bracket as #1 overall seed Connecticut. If Boise State were to beat UCLA they'd play the winner of the Texas A&M-Penn game on Monday and if they won that game they'd collide with UCONN March 25th in Bridgeport, Ct. assuming the Huskies who have won 107 straight games continue to win.
Meantime another local story line is that of Maryland's freshman point guard Destiny Slocum from Meridian and Mountain View High school. Slocum has led the Terrapins to a 30-2 record, their only losses were to UCONN and at Ohio State. Maryland opens against Bucknell Friday at 10 a.m. on ESPN2. If Maryland advances to the elite 8 as expected, they would most likely meet UCONN in what would be a marque game in women's basketball pairing teams with a combined record of 70-2 and a Husky team whose winning streak would then be 110 straight.
Slocum was the Big 10 freshman of the year and is fast becoming a darling of ESPN who aired highlights of Slocum during the selection show on Monday.
Yet another local tie-in for fans is Montana State against Washington. The Lady Bobcats, who won the Big Sky Tournament, are coached by Tricia Binford who played for Boise State and is in the BSU Hall of Fame. Binford and the Bobcats play Washington at 7 p.m. Saturday on ESPN2.
So there you have it plenty to follow for local fans in this years NCAA women's basketball tournament.
