The calendar says August 12th and while most of us are trying to squeeze the most out of  what remains of summer, the season officially ended today with the start of practices for fall Idaho High School sports.

Football will get most of the headlines but soccer, volleyball, cross country, swimming, cheer and dance practices have all begin and for Idaho's student-athletes that means an end to summer.

In fact by the end of this month regular season schedules will be underway. The first football game of the season is Thursday August 29th at Dona Larson Park as the Borah Lions host the 5A Defending State Champion Rocky Mountain Grizzlies.

Sports radio 630 The Fan will begin our McDonald's game of the week broadcasts with the Lions and Grizzlies, the first of back to back broadcasts featuring Rocky Mountain.

Friday September 6th 630 The Fan will be at Mountain View as the Mavericks host the Grizzlies in a rematch of the 2018 5A Championship game.

So forget what the calendar says, today is the official end of summer, just ask any parent of a student-athlete!

Be sure and follow 630thefan.com for scores and stories on all high school sports plus a reminder to listen to "Fanfare" hourly 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday exclusively on 630 The Fan for the latest in Idaho prep sports news.
