Remember when Boise State was considering the Big East conference? How about Idaho in the Sun Belt? Neither made any sense and that's why BSU stayed with the Mountain West and Idaho is headed to the Big Sky.

Having well defined regional opposition is critical to players and fans alike and that goes for hockey as well as football.

The Idaho Steelheads are in the Mountain Division of the ECHL. So is Utah and Colorado and both have proven to be natural rivals that peak fan interest. Idaho and Alaska had a great rivalry going for years until the Aces folded. Las Vegas is also no longer leaving the ECHL to find some Mountain Division teams.

Teams like Wichita as in Wichita, Kansas. Tulsa as in Oklahoma, Rapid City as in the Dakota's and Allen as in Allen, Texas.

Now that's a division with some identity issues!  Just consider the team knick names.

Steelheads, Eagles and Grizzlies oh my! Now those are mountain names. Then you have the Texas Americans, Tulsa Oilers, Rapid City Rush, okay maybe gold rush and the Wichita Thunder.

Come on Spokane get your hockey face on the ECHL mountain division needs you. Seattle, too big for the ECHL?

For the time being the Mountain division is playing a lot in Central time.
