I'm not sure what formula is used to fill in the bracket blanks at the 5A State Softball Tournament in Post Falls but it doesn't take a bracket genius to see the brackets are top heavy.

Mountain View has been ranked number one in the state the entire season with Eagle and Lake City both in the top 5. All three are in the same bracket along with Rigby, the sacrificial underdog.

Rigby, 14-12 opens with 24-3 Mountain View which on paper seems like a predictable outcome.

But what about 25-0 Lake City against 22-5 Eagle. Whats worse, if Mountain View wins as expected they'd play the Lake City-Eagle winner in session two and just like that two of the top 5 teams in the state will have been sent to the loser bracket.

Compare that with the bottom half of the bracket where 11-8 Coeur d'Alene plays 22-4 Highland and Rocky Mountain 17-10 takes on 15-12 Centennial.

In softball a team can come back through the loser bracket and win the championship so despite the intriguing opening showdown between unbeaten Lake City and highly ranked Eagle the path to a state title won't be a dead end...just cluttered with an extra game if it gets to that point.

It's for sure to win a state softball title this year the eventual champion will have to play some serious hardball!
