It will definitely take competition to determine who is #1 in Idaho 5A high school football this year as the final regular season media poll has Mountain View and Coeur d'Alene tied at the top.

Both teams received 45 points. Mountain View is 9-0 and the reigning 5A state champion while the Vikings are 7-2 but coming off an impressive win over previously undefeated Post Falls. That victory was enough to sway some voters despite the Vikings two losses.

Rocky Mountain, also with two losses is 3rd with Highland and Post Falls completing the top 5. Knocking on the door with votes were Eagle and Capital both with two losses.

Not so ironically Eagle earned a first round bye via a coin flip to win their division which ended in a three way tie with Borah and Rocky Mountain.

To say the voters are crazy would be crazy because the 5A playoff picture is more wide open this year than I can ever remember.

I will say that so long as Mountain View remains unbeaten, they by virtue of being the defending state champs deserve to be #1. Otherwise it's a crap shoot.

The 5A playoffs actually begin Thursday at Donna Larsen Park in Boise with Borah hosting Rigby. The winner advances to play at Mountain View November 3rd.

Friday Donna Larsen will host another playoff game as Capital and Timberline collide at 7 p.m. on sports radio 630 The Fan. The winner travels to Pocatello for a showdown against Highland.

The two other 5A first round games are Meridian at Madison and Rocky Mountain at Post Falls.

Should be a fun Friday!
