5A District softball might want to take a lesson from the 5A District baseball tournament and protect the best two teams during the regular season.

In baseball, Rocky Mountain and Mountain View finished one-two in the regular season standings and both earned state tournament berths and played a best of three series for the district title! The format protected the best all season and allowed the rest of the SIC teams to battle for the remaining state berths while the Grizzlies and Mavericks battle for a crown based on a season of work.

5A District softball doesn't work that way and when Boise upset Eagle 2-0, handing the Mustangs their first loss of the season, there was a chance Idaho's Nationally ranked prep softball team wouldn't even make the state tournament.

Granted it was a slight chance but how embarrassing would it have been if the 25-1-1 Mustangs, ranked among the nations top 25 high school softball teams all season, stumbled at the end and missed the state tournament?

Like I said the chance was slight and Eagle beat Meridian 6-1 Wednesday night to nail down a state berth. The Mustangs probably weren't too concerned just bummed the there was no longer a goose egg in the loss column.

Still why not protect a team based on their season of work at least your are guaranteed the best of the best will compete at state.

By the way Mountain View outlasted Timberline 8-7 to also earn a state tournament berth and tonight at 6 p.m. at Capital high school Rocky Mountain vs. Boise for the District championship, both of those teams also destined for state.
