“Care will prevent 9 out of 10 fires.” was one of Smokey The Bear's lines back in the day. However his most popular slogan is  “Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires!” Even though that line was first used in 1947 you would think that some things are just common sense.

Look I get it, you're excited to get out of the city and into nature, you want to smell the fresh mountain air and be one with with the woods. Two days later you've had enough of roughing it and you're ready for a hot shower and a warm bed so you pack up and head home. Did you forget something? equipment?...Check... pack out trash?... check... extinguish the campfire? check... are you sure? Honestly I was shocked to find out that Boise national forest fire prevention employees identified  and extinguished over 400 abandoned campfires in 2020.

How is that even possible? Are Idahoans that irresponsible? According to the U.S. Department of Interior "as many as 90 percent of wildland fires in the United States are caused by people"  We love our outdoor activities and camping is amongst the most popular so let's be proactive and make sure that we put out our campfires completely. Boise NF advises that a campfire must be " cool to the touch" to be considered "Out"
