Idaho is home to some of the most beautiful lakes in the U.S. and we have a lot of them. Compared to other states Idaho boasts a massive amount of waterways, from lakes to rivers to reservoirs. Many are an easy drive, park and play situation. Others however have no road access and must be hiked into. These are some of the most pristine and private lakes in the gem state that you have to backpack in and out of. Much of this list is from The Out Bound.

Backpack through Surprise Valley near Mackay to Lake 10148 - According to Garren Moore, This is a 13 mile hike with a 2900 foot elevation gain. He describes the first 3 miles as a nice flat start before the climb really begins. This unbelievable and remote lake is at the foot of Standhope Peak. If you like to fish, this is not the lake for you. However if peace, solitude and legendary views are what you are after. This is a great one to check out.

Born Lakes in Stanley This is an 8 mile, 2000 foot elevation gain hike according to Garren Moore. There are several crystal clear lakes with unbelievable views and remote campsites. It is an easy drive on a well maintained gravel road to get to the trailhead, which starts at a high elevation of 8850 feet. There are forks and multiple trails that branch off to different lakes in the area.

Alice Lake is another one near Stanley in the Sawtooth Wilderness. In fact it is one of the top hiked in spots in the area. Dusty Klein notes that the scenery is rich with stunning creeks and waterfalls, wildlife and more. This hike is 11.2 miles with a 1600 foot elevation climb. There are wonderful little camp spots along the water. If you get to Alice and want to keep going there are more trails and lakes to hike to from Alice Lake.
