Idaho’s Love Laws: The Fate of Engagement Rings

While it might be painful, calling off an engagement is typically the right move. We can't think of a scenario where you can come back and work it out after one person in the relationship says: "It's over."

We're not talking about couples who choose to wait either or just give themselves more time, we mean that definitive statement when one of the people in the relationship's mind is completely made up.

Like - it's really over.

What does the law say?

It varies from state to state and some places like California have pretty black and white rules on the matter. Shoot, they break it down as the person responsible for proposing is a "donor" and the recipient is a "donee". According to California legislation:

...in the event that the donee refuses to enter into the marriage as contemplated or that it is given up by mutual consent, the donor may recover such gift or such part of its value as may, under all of the circumstances of the case, be found by a court or jury to be just.

In short, if someone pops the question to you, that ring ain't yours until you say "I do."

That being said, what is the rule in Idaho? Is it as black and white as California? Not quite but there are some rules.
