‘House of Cards’ Plotting Multiple Spinoffs After Season 6 Cancellation
House of Cards is approaching an understandable endpoint after six seasons and increasing scrutiny around Kevin Spacey, but the Underwoods’ legacy may yet continue. According to new reports, Netflix is going the Game of Thrones route with a number of potential spinoffs.
Just hours after Netflix confirmed House of Cards would end with a sixth and final season, Variety reports that the series has begun active development of multiple spinoff projects. The most prominent idea has executive producer Eric Roth continuing the story of Michael Kelly’s Doug Stamper, while “at least two other spinoff ideas are also being explored, though writers have not yet been attached to all of them.”
Sources say the plan to end House of Cards with Season 6 arrived months before Kevin Spacey addressed allegations from actor Anthony Rapp of attempted pedophilia in 1986. Netflix was said to be “deeply troubled” by the report, adding that executives met with House of Cards cast and crew to “ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported,” while Spacey himself remains off-set for now.
Netflix and producer Media Rights Capital are said to be following the same Game of Thrones model that develops multiple spinoff possibilities at once, but will fans want to return to the House of Cards world after a sixth (and likely controversial) final season?
