Boise State's quest for redemption begins this Saturday with the annual spring game. Last year's disappointing 7-5 left Bronco fans wondering what it will take for the Broncos to challenge for the Mountain West title and a return to a New Year's Six Bowl Game.

5 Boise State Spring Game Questions

Five crucial factors that Bronco Nation will be watching during this week's spring game.

The coaching staff has been overhauled and under-reported by the Boise media. The 'young no one over forty staff' has been replaced with experienced and high-paid assistants. And unlike other years, BSU assistants have been given multi-year contracts. Surprisingly offensive coordinator Tim Plough was retained after last season.

Boise State announced a major costly renovation to their entire athletic complex. The university will need the football team to have a record year to have a chance to meet its financial goals. Put it simply, another marginal year, and there will be no passion from donors to give to BSU.

Winning drives donations, Boise State Football needs to reestablish itself as a power player among the Group of Five schools. How often can we hear ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit say, "Boise State back in the day?" The team can't count on a built-in fan base to fund their goals. The Treasure Valley's growth has brought in more folks who are not automatically loyal to Boise State.

Unfortunately for Boise State, there is not a 'big' home opponent to entice more season ticket sales. In the past, the athletic department would leverage a big game, like last year's game with Oklahoma State, to get more folks to buy season tickets that generally would pass. We saw the Morrison Center use this technique when Hamilton came to town. You had to buy a season pass if you wanted to see Hamilton.

On and off the field, the Broncos have an enormous challenge. We'll all be watching to see how successful they are in achieving their goals. Although the odds may be against them, don't count out Boise State to make things happen.
