When it comes to automobile racing the first race most people think of is the Indianapolis 500. There really is no race to match the Indy 500 but locally one of the most exciting weekends of oval auto racing will be this Friday and Saturday at Meridian Speedway.

The Diamond Cup features methanol burning winged sprint cars. There open wheel design means some exciting racing action as they go wheel to wheel even when one small touch could send them flying into the wall.

Thirty NSRA Winged spring cars will be on hand for this two night racing event but the fun doesn't stop there. The Super Modified's are back for the first time in 10 years!

Similar to the winged sprint cars the Super Mods began to disappear in 2008 but Meridian Speedway track manager Adam Nelson put out a call, provided a purse and eased some restrictions and the result was at least 15 Super Mods will be racing around the track this weekend.

If you have never heard these cars roar to life it is something else. I've been in a pace car in front of a field of 15 Winged Sprint Cars and you can feel the track shake. They generate up to 900 horsepower and only weigh 1700 pounds, that means some super quick lap times.
